Dental Veneers
Dental veneers, otherwise known as porcelain veneers, are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth and help improve the appearance of teeth.
Porcelain dental veneers can eliminate an array of imperfections, including:
- Gaps in teeth
- Misaligned teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Discolored teeth
Advantages of Dental Veneers
- Provide a natural tooth appearance.
- Gum tissue tolerates porcelain well.
- Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant.
- The color can allow dark teeth to appear whiter.
- Offer a conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color and shape.
Disadvantages of Dental Veneers
- The process is not reversible.
- Veneers are much more costly than composite resin bonding.
- Usually not repairable should they chip or crack.
- Your teeth can become more sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages.
- They may not exactly match the color of your other teeth. Since the veneer’s color cannot be altered once in place, you will need to whiten before getting them placed.
- Veneers can dislodge and fall off. To lower the chance of this occurring, do not bite your nails; chew on pencils, ice, or other hard objects; or excessive pressure on your teeth.
- Even though you have veneers, your teeth can still experience decay.
- Veneers are not the best choice for individuals who have unhealthy teeth, weakened teeth, or a small amount of existing enamel.
- Individuals who clench and grind their teeth are poor candidates for porcelain veneers, as these activities can cause them to crack or chip.
What is the Difference Between Veneers, Crowns, and Implants?
Veneers, crowns, and dental implants each serve different purposes in restoring or improving your smile. Veneers are thin shells that cover only the front surface of a tooth, while crowns encase the entire tooth for added protection and strength. Veneers are typically about 1 mm thick, whereas crowns are about 2 mm, making veneers less invasive as they require less filing of the natural tooth.
Crowns, however, are necessary when more significant tooth damage or decay is present. On the other hand, dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone, and after the healing process, a crown is placed on top to restore function and appearance. This process may take several months as the area needs time to heal before the crown is attached.
